Whenever possible I like to schedule a time to sit down and chat with my portrait subjects at least once before we shoot. Of course I can shoot someone cold and still produce an excellent portrait, but having a chance to get to know them a little first is a luxury of time that my art (rather than commercial) intentions afford me.
Chloe and I met at a gallery opening and when we agreed to meet up at my studio to discuss the portrait she told me not to be scared but she’d just taken a header off her bike last weekend. “Don’t worry, it’ll heal.”
And it will. And of course I offered sympathies and assurances that it would heal just fine (because I’m also a doctor, plastic surgeon and dental surgeon so I know), but I couldn’t resist snapping a few portraits of my lovely and vibrant new subject all beat the fuck up.
Chloe - Well done darlin’, you’re a bad ass.
